In October 2023, G A Davidson Joiner & Contractor celebrated its 70th anniversary, now being run by the third generation of the same family.

Sandy had served his apprenticeship in Blairgowrie with Bell & Sons Joiners, and later worked for the M L Thomas haulage company and George Ferguson Joiners in Alyth, where he became foreman. He went into business on his own in the former laundry of Barony Hall, later moving into a workshop he built himself on the concrete base of a former Nissen hut built for Polish Army troops during World War 2.

He did general joinery work around the town and on local farms and eventually employed two joiners. When Graham Snr left school in 1964, he was apprenticed to one of the joiners. The business thrived until Sandy decided to retire in 1977, but sadly he was diagnosed with cancer and died about a year later.

Still only 27, Graham took over the business and kept going, winning new contracts for flat conversions and house extensions to add to the general joinery work.

During the 1980s, we were assembling kit houses for building companies and eventually decided they could make the kits as well as assemble them, generating more business.

In 1990 we bought the old Victorian mill building at the corner of Bamff Road and Pitnacree Street. and built a big workshop area downstairs, with offices and a flat for the family upstairs, later creating two more flats to let. After a few years, the building next door became available and was was ideal for the house kits we were building at the time, so we bought it and turned the original workshop into another four flats, and we’ve been here ever since.

We’d also started winning maintenance contracts from the local council, work that continued for almost 30 years. We continue to hold a number of large contracts which include working with Police Scotland, Scottish Fire & Rescue Service, Scottish Government. Our workmanship and service is backed up by our Safe Contractor accreditation and we have worked hard to gain BM Trada accreditation for the installation of approved fire doors.

In 2011, another health scare prompted Graham to take a back seat and his son – Graham Alexander left his job managing the bodyshop at Norman Laing’s garage in Blairgowrie to take over. Having worked with his dad during holidays and weekends from a young age he was able to take over the reigns. Sadly, Graham Snr passed away in April 2023 but his legacy lives on in the G A Davidson name and ethos.

We’ve always had great staff, and we take care of them - they work with us, not for us. We also emphasise tidiness and smartness in our workshop, on site and in our vans and equipment. We are now a team of 5 joiners, 1 apprentice joiner, a labourer and an administrator with Graham Jnr at the helm

G A Davidson believes in putting something back into the Alyth community, and is a long-standing sponsor of, among others, the Bowling and Tennis Club’s annual open competition, the Quiz League and Alyth & district Agricultural show.
